Past Life Regression in Charleston has always meant going home for me. I grew up in Charleston in the 1960s in a house where past life regression was not unusual. My father, a medical doctor who studied with Dave Elman and Milton Erickson, brought hypnosis into his practice in the 1950s and began guiding people into past lives in the mid 1960s, and from about the age of ten I got to watch him regress the neighbors in our living room, including one who went back to a life as a caveman. As a teenager I wanted no part of being hypnotized myself, sure that hypnosis was a truth serum. When I started traveling for sessions I added Charleston in 2012, usually once a year, staying with a family friend and working in the office above her garage. In those years my listings on the Newton Institute website filled my trips, Charleston included, sometimes before I even arrived. Today my Charleston clients, from Mount Pleasant to Summerville to James Island, meet me over Zoom.

Sessions for Charleston
Is Charleston Still Part of Your Past Life Regression Practice?
It always will be. Charleston is not just another city on my list, it is my hometown. Every session is online over Zoom, which puts Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Summerville, North Charleston, Goose Creek, James Island, where I was raised, and Daniel Island all the same distance from me, and nobody has to cross the Ravenel Bridge to get here. Find a day and a time on the schedule that works for you, and we meet on Zoom.
The 1960s
Who Was Doing Past Life Regression in Charleston in the 1960s?
My father was. He was a medical doctor who studied with Dave Elman and Milton Erickson, he brought hypnosis into his practice in the 1950s, and by the mid 1960s he was guiding people into past lives in our Charleston living room. He would have a party, invite people over, and take them back into past lives. From about the age of eight or nine I got to sit and watch. One neighbor went back to a life as a caveman.
Years later I was studying with Dolores Cannon, who developed the Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique. One day during lunch she said nobody was doing this work back in the 60s when she started doing it, and I told her my dad was doing past life in the mid 60s, and that I watched him take a neighbor back to a life as a caveman. As I recall, she did not have a comment on that one.
As a teenager I wanted no part of being hypnotized myself. I had decided hypnosis was a truth serum, and Dad could have asked me what I was doing last night, driving his car all over town. It was 2003, after my mother passed, when I started learning hypnosis myself, that I realized hypnosis is not about control, it is not a truth serum.
That part of the story continued in Texas, and the Dallas page tells it.
The Teachers
Who Taught Mark Johnson Past Life Regression?
It started at home, and then I went and studied with the best known names in this work. I took a class with Brian Weiss, the psychiatrist who wrote Many Lives, Many Masters, in Austin in 2005, right after I started learning hypnosis. I trained in Life Between Lives with Michael Newton, the author of Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls, in Chicago in 2007, and as a result of that training, I decided to specialize in spiritual hypnotherapy.
Then in 2008 I went to Fayetteville, Arkansas for my first class with Dolores Cannon, who developed the Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique, and I kept returning to study with her for the next four years. As I tell my students, I have taken what I learned and made it my own. The full stories, with photos, are in the Teachers and Influences section of my blog.
Analytical Minds
Can an Analytical Mind Be Hypnotized?
Yes. An analytical, left brain mind, and I see plenty of them in engineers and software developers, is no barrier to hypnosis. The logical chatter just needs something to do. I use a simple visual exercise I call the Ball. You imagine holding a ball, toss it up, and allow it to change into something different.
It sounds almost too simple, and what it does is shift you from analyzing what is happening into simply allowing impressions to flow from your subconscious mind. Once that shift happens, the critical mind steps out of the way, and my analytical clients access deep memories just as easily as anyone else. That is what is important, allow it to change, allow memories, impressions and feelings to share a story with you.
A Common Worry
What If I Fall Asleep During My Session?
I guess the session would be over pretty quick. Here is the thing. There are two times people tend to fall asleep. One is at the beginning, while I am taking you into hypnosis, which typically runs 20 to 25 minutes. The other is at the end, when I teach you self hypnosis so you can put yourself to sleep at night, and some people take me literally.
The rest of the session is a conversation, so it becomes very obvious if someone has drifted off, because you are not talking to me. And I have learned multiple ways to wake people up if that happens, even online. In fact my clients have told me that when this happens, they are in a deeper state of hypnosis than they were before they went to sleep, and I have noticed this myself as well, when experiencing a past life as a client.

Super experience! Would highly recommend. The session I had with Mark has profoundly changed my life in so many positive ways. I have been able to release pain in my shoulder that has been there my whole life, improve my diet, sleep better, improve family relationships and given me confidence to move forward in my work.

The session with Mark was awesome as always! I had the Quantun Healing Hypnosis Session and Mark took it to another level. It was really fun working with Mark.

I just wanted to say thanks again for the session and everything that we spoke about. I have been putting myself into hypnosis every now and then since we met and it's so great to feel like I can easily clear my mind! I have also had a much clearer understanding of what direction I am headed because of everything that came up in the past lives, so great!

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Every session is online over Zoom now. Charleston is my hometown and I came back for sessions about once a year from 2012 until the travel years ended in early 2020. In March 2020 I moved the whole practice online, and my Charleston clients tell me the sessions go just as deep from home.
Sessions are scheduled from 10 in the morning Central, which is 11 in the morning on Charleston clocks. A Past Life Regression typically runs three to three and a half hours and a Quantum Healing Hypnosis session four to five, so plan on an afternoon. If you need an earlier start, book the first slot and send me a note, and I can move you up an hour.
Yes. I grew up in Charleston watching my father hypnotize the neighbors, and by the mid 1960s he was guiding some of them into past lives right there in the house. He was a medical doctor who studied with Dave Elman and Milton Erickson. I was raised on James Island and spent my time between James Island, Folly Beach, Mount Pleasant and West Ashley, with plenty of hours at Leonard's School of Music. Mount Pleasant was my best friend's home, and he was later the best man at my wedding. I wanted nothing to do with hypnosis as a teenager. It was not until 2003, after my mother passed and I wanted to find a way to talk with her, that I learned hypnosis myself. Coming back to Charleston for sessions always felt like closing a circle.
An analytical, left brain mind, which I see often in engineers and software developers, is no barrier to hypnosis. To quiet that logical chatter I use a simple visual exercise I call the Ball. You imagine holding a ball, toss it up, and allow it to change into something different. It sounds almost too simple, but what it does is shift you from trying to analyze what is happening into simply allowing impressions to flow from your subconscious. Once that shift happens, the critical mind steps out of the way and my analytical clients access deep memories and knowings just as easily as anyone else. And here is something else about analytical minds. Engineers and programmers are often very creative people, using both sides of the brain, because engineers design things. I worked for 12 years as a programmer, so I can say from personal experience that writing software takes a combination of logic and creativity, and that combination makes an excellent hypnosis subject.
You are safe if the Zoom connection drops, and we have a plan for it before we begin. During the pre talk I establish a simple protocol. If you do not hear my voice for a minute or two, you come up just enough to deal with the situation. You do not emerge from hypnosis, you simply rise to a level where you can reconnect. Then you redial on Zoom or call me back on the phone and we resume where we left off. On my end I have fiber internet with a backup connection, and I block off an extra hour or two on my schedule so any connection hiccup can be managed without rushing your session. My clients tell me that knowing this ahead of time takes the worry off the table.
If you carry memories of dying as a soldier, you are in familiar territory for me. Clients with spontaneous recall of historic battles often carry residual physical and emotional weight from that death into this life. In hypnosis I use release techniques to separate that battlefield energy from your modern body. Reviewing the event from an observer's perspective helps your subconscious take in that the war is over and that you are safe in your current body today. Many people find the fear and tension they carried eases once that message lands. The memory stays, but its grip loosens.
Those intuitive flashes, hunches and psychic knowings are often messages your spirit guides or Higher Self are dropping into your mind. In the hypnotic state, clients discover that what they had been writing off as random thoughts, odd coincidences or their brain doing something weird is actually real spiritual guidance. In a Quantum Healing Hypnosis session you can ask your guides about your gifts directly and how to use them. From there we work on trusting it. I teach self hypnosis anchors and progressive relaxation so you can quiet the logical, analytical part of your mind on your own. With practice, many people learn to hear these signals comfortably, recognize them when they arrive and trust them enough to navigate their lives by them. Understanding the gift is the first step, and using it well is the second.
