Tom Kenyon and the Sound Healing Work That Opened Another Door for Me

Some teachers change the way you think. Tom Kenyon changed the way I listen.

Tom Kenyon.

A Name I Kept Running Into

I first heard the name Tom Kenyon from a family friend back home in Charleston, South Carolina. She had mentioned another person who worked with sound, and then she mentioned Tom.

At the time I did not do much with it.

About a year later I was cleaning out my car and found a business card with Tom Kenyon's name on it. I remembered what my friend had said and thought, “Oh yeah. I need to check that out.”

So I did.

I had already been listening to brainwave and frequency based recordings by Jeffrey Thompson. I was interested in how sound could influence mood, attention, meditation, and inner experience. Then I began listening to Tom's work.

At first some of it was unfamiliar to me. Tom uses crystal bowls, vocal tones, and sound in ways that do not always fit neatly into ordinary categories. Some recordings challenged my expectations. I remember hearing certain pieces and thinking, “I can't listen to this one.”

Then I experienced the work live.

My First Sound Healing Class

In 2009 I took a sound healing class with Tom Kenyon. It was amazing.

Hearing his work in person was completely different from hearing a recording at home. The sounds, the bowls, the vocal tones, and the energy of the room all came together in a way I had not expected.

That experience opened a door for me.

I began buying crystal bowls. I collected recordings. I listened more closely. I became interested not only in sound itself, but in what happens when a person gives themselves permission to become quiet enough to really receive it.

Tom's official site describes his work as existing at the intersection of rational, cognitive experience and trans rational, intuitive experience. That description makes sense to me. Sound can be technical. It can be physical. It can be musical. And it can also take us somewhere that is difficult to explain with ordinary words.

Sound Healing, Meditation, and Deep Listening

The phrase sound healing can mean different things to different people.

For me it does not mean that a bowl, a tone, or a recording does something to you. It means sound can create a setting where you slow down, become present, notice what is happening inside, and relate to yourself differently.

Tom's work gave me a direct experience of that.

He is a musician, teacher, and longtime explorer of sound and consciousness. His website describes his work as a form of brain and mind re education and emphasizes the relationship between sound, attention, and expanded states of awareness.

What I learned from him was not a script. It was a quality of listening.

Orcas Island, 2011

In 2011, about a month before my wife and I got married, I traveled to Orcas Island for a meditation workshop with Tom. It was a multi day retreat in the Pacific Northwest.

The workshop was another important experience for me. It was not just about listening to a recording or learning a technique. It was about spending time in meditation, paying attention to subtle changes, and learning how sound can support a deeper inner state.

By then I had already become more interested in crystal bowls and had spent more time with Tom's recordings. I had also shared that interest with my friend Rosemary when I returned to Charleston to do sessions. She had some of Tom's CDs, and we listened to them together.

The work became part of an ongoing conversation in my life. What happens when you give the mind a little less to hold onto and give the inner world a little more room to speak?

A Lesson in Gratitude Without an Object

In 2016 my wife and I attended a three day Hathor intensive with Tom in Seattle. It happened to begin on our fifth wedding anniversary, 11/11/16, five years after we married on 11/11/11.

My wife was not sure about the timing at first. But after the first break she looked at me, smiled, and said, “Thank you. This is amazing. This is incredible.”

One of the teachings that stayed with me from that workshop involved gratitude and appreciation.

Tom said something like this. Enter a state of gratitude or appreciation without focusing on anything specific to be grateful for.

When I first heard that I thought, How do you do that?

Then, when he invited us to try it, I found that I could.

It was a subtle but powerful experience. Instead of directing appreciation toward a person, event, or thing, the practice was to rest in the feeling itself.

That is a lesson I still think about. Sometimes the most meaningful inner shifts are not about adding another idea. Sometimes they are about letting go of the need to explain the feeling and simply allowing it to be there.

The Hathor teachings Tom works with are laid out in The Hathor Material, subtitled Messages from an Ascended Civilization. I am presenting it here as the context for the intensive I attended, not as a claim this website asks you to accept. If the material interests you, the honest thing is to read it yourself and see what you make of it.

The Recordings I Still Return To

I have listened to a lot of Tom's recordings over the years. One of my favorites is known by two titles, Infinite Pool and Activate the Holographic Mind. It is the same sound material released in different formats.

I do not put Tom's music on my website. His site is clear that his music may not be copied, distributed, or used with other media. Instead I will point visitors to his official site, where he offers recordings, samples, and selected listening resources.

That is the right way to share the work. Let people experience it from the source.

What Tom Kenyon Taught Me

Tom Kenyon is one of my heroes and one of my teachers.

He helped me understand that sound can be more than background. It can be an invitation. A tone, a bowl, a pause, or a piece of music can help create the conditions for stillness, attention, and inner exploration.

I do not try to be Tom Kenyon, and I do not present sound as a substitute for medical or mental health care.

What I carry forward is the deeper lesson. Slow down. Listen. Let the mind settle. Let the answers come from within.

That lesson fits naturally with the spiritual hypnotherapy work I do today. Whether someone is exploring a past life, a memory, a relationship, or a question about purpose, the session begins with attention. It begins with creating enough quiet for something true to be noticed.
